Date published: 25 July 2009

The Rochdale Fusiliers Association 250th Anniversary Celebration Minden Ball was held this evening, Saturday 25 July, at the Masonic Hall.

Talking to Rochdale Online, Chairman of the Rochdale Fusiliers, Councillor Tom Bailey explained that the Ball is an annual event commemorating The Battle of Minden, which took place on 1 August 1759, during the Seven Years War (1756-63). The battle was the first time infantry had beaten back cavalry charges.

Councillor Bailey said: “An excellent turn out; guests include, Major Edmond Garside, Colonel Mike Lee, Wing Commander David Forbes (President of the Rochdale branch of the Royal British Legion), Captain Alan Marshall, Canon Alan Shakleton and the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift and Ms Sue Etchells”

The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers silver drums, described as "priceless" were on display.

The Eddie Hilton Quartet provided the entertainment as guests enjoyed a sherry reception and a sumptuous buffet meal.
