Break-dancing teens took to the streets

Date published: 23 July 2009

Break-dancing teens took to the town centre streets on Wednesday (22 July) to promote a new campaign to keep kids busy over the summer break.

Safe4summer.com is a new website which young people and parents can use to find out what activities are available in their area over the holidays.

Rochdale Borough Council, Greater Manchester Police, Fire and Rescue Service and GMPTE, want to make sure that young people don’t have any excuse to be bored this summer because there is plenty on offer for young people in the borough.

Youngsters from Academy Dance House who are the North West’s Street Dancing Champions, including Britain’s Junior Break Dancing Champion, 11 year old Tyler Bolton, treated town centre visitors to jaw dropping performances, giving young people a taster of some of the activities they can be a part of.

Ann Tipton, Head of Service for Learners and Young People at Rochdale Borough Council, said: “The Safe4summer website aims to keep young people entertained and active this summer. There are plenty of activities and events, such as youth clubs and projects provided by the youth service.

"Whether you like dancing, sport, art or drama there is something for everyone, so get online and get involved in something productive.”

One young passer-by said; “The dancers were awesome, I would love to be able to dance like that! I’m going to check out the website and see what classes are available in my area.”

Glyn O’Reilly, Fire Service Partnership Liaison Officer said: “It is not worth risking your life for a spot of fun.

“Go and swim in your public swimming pool it is just as fun and remember swimming is free for 16s and under in Link4life swimming pools across the borough,”

Jeanette Staley, Acting Community Safety Manager at Rochdale Borough Council, said; “The Safe4summer.com website aims to banish boredom by giving young people and parents a quick and easy way to find out what’s happening in the borough.

"We want as many young people as possible to do something great this summer and you can start now by checking out the website at safe4summer.com.”
