A man on a mission
Date published: 23 July 2009
A 62-year-old former Rochdale Grammar School pupil is on a mission to track down his old classmates.
Tony Child, who now lives near the Lake District, says he hopes to find his old pals to share a trip down memory lane, of Rochdale in the 1950s and 60s.
Mr Child has been in touch with about 120 ex-pupils so far.
His pursuit is far from over as he is still trying to contact some pupils, and would like to do so soon, as he believes there is a chance that the school will be demolished.
Tony Child visited his old school recently, meeting another ex-pupil who had travelled from Australia, to which he described the experience as “emotional”.
Mr Child said: “It was an amazing feeling being back in the old classroom”
As well as visiting what was Rochdale Grammar for boys, he was granted access to some of the school’s memorabilia.
Mr Child is particularly interested in pictures from 1955 to 1965, before the school was integrated into a co-educational school.
Through various efforts Tony Child gathered information and discovered that original records from the school are still available via Touchstones, however due to the Data Protection Act he is unable to gain access.
