Town could benefit from World Cup bid
Date published: 22 July 2009
If the 2018 World Cup comes to England, Manchester hopes to stake a claim for a share of the glory, which could increase the economic activity of surrounding towns, including Rochdale.
In 2008 Manchester World Sport events attracted more than 300,000 visitors, and generated £23 million of net economic impact.
The revenue generated through the World Cup, if Manchester is chosen as one of the host cities, will not only affect the City of Manchester directly, but it is likely to have an affect on the surrounding 10 boroughs in the Assocations of Greater Manchester Authorities, which includes Rochdale.
When the Commonwealth games were in Manchester, a study commissioned by Manchester City Council estimated that the local economy benefited from 6,100 direct full time equivalent jobs, of which 2,400 were additional direct and indirect jobs to Manchester, attributable to the Games.
Manchester’s bid to become a host city is being led by Manchester City Council.
Manchester has previously been host to sporting events such as the Champions League Final and the world swimming championships, as well as the Commonwealths.
