Girls set for Wembley after £800 Donation
Date published: 19 July 2009
Rochdale Hornets Rugby League Club and Rochdale MP Paul Rowen have £800 to pupils at Hollingworth Business and Enterprise College.
The money will be put towards a trip to Wembley after the school’s year 7 girl’s rugby league team recently reached the national final of the prestigious Carnegie Champion Schools competition.
The girls will head out at the end of August where they will be spending 3 days in London in there bid to become the best team in the country.
Hollingworth will be taking on DE LA SALLE from St. Helens at RAF in Uxbridge. They will then have a tour around Wembley Stadium before going back to Wembley on Saturday 29th August for a pre-match parade around the Wembley pitch prior to the Challenge Cup Final.
Rochdale MP Paul Rowen said: “When the school contacted me a few days ago asking whether I would be able to arrange some sort of donation towards the trip I was more than happy to help.
"The girls have done fantastically well to reach the final beating many teams along the way. They are a real credit to the staff, school and to Rochdale itself. I wish them all the best for the final and I look forward to seeing them at Wembley in a few weeks time.”
Milnrow and Newhey Councillor Irene Davidson said: “The determination, effort and skill they have shown throughout the season is amazing and I am delighted that the Pennines Township decided to put £500 towards the trip.
"Promoting sport locally, especially rugby league, is important in schools not only for the game but for the future health of younger members in our community. Hopefully now the girls can go on to win the tournament to top off what has been a fantastic season for them.”
