North West MEP Chris Davies has been appointed team leader and spokesman for the European Liberal group on the environment committee in the European Parliament.
Davies will now lead the seven-strong Liberal group on the committee over the next five years giving Rochdale a seat at the top levels of European decision making on climate change, protecting our natural environment and ensuring that the EU creates new jobs and takes the green road out of the recession.
Mr Davies said: “Threats to our environment don’t stop at national borders and the EU is a powerful force for improving the quality of our environment across the North West, across the UK and across the continent.
“I am humbled by the support of my colleagues across Europe to take forward this exciting work."
In recent months Mr Davies has been recognised by the European Voice newspaper and the Eurelectric pan-European trade organisation as one of the most hardworking champions of the environment in the European Parliament.
