Unemployment continues to rise
Date published: 15 July 2009
Unemployment in Rochdale has increased, according to figures released by the ONS today (Wednesday 15 July)
The number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in Rochdale rose to 7,316 from 7,223 over the course of the month.
However, the number of people claiming Jobseekers’ Allowance in the Greater Manchester region is down by 1%.
Samantha Dunbar, Policy Manager for Employment and Skills at Greater Manchester Chamber, said: ”With the unemployment levels in Rochdale still creeping upwards, it is important that nobody takes their eyes off the ball regarding the economy; it may still get worse before it gets significantly better.”
“However, for the first time since the beginning of the year, the claimant count for Greater Manchester has dropped, which will no doubt bring some cheer to residents and businesses alike.”
