Read all about it - Book Challenge 2009

Date published: 10 July 2009

Local libraries are working with the Family Learning Service and Learn Local promote the Six Book Challenge 2009.

Adult learners across the borough have taken part in the challenge which is targeted at emergent readers – adults who can read but need to build experience.

The challenge is run by The Reading Agency - an independent charity working to get more people reading.

Participants are encouraged to read up to 6 books and then record their reading in a diary.

Once they have completed the challenge they receive a certificate. The Six Book Challenge helps support new readers to improve confidence and literacy levels in a positive and enjoyable way.

So far there are 19 finishers who were invited to a celebration at the Wheatsheaf Library this week (Wednesday) to receive their certificates.

Paul Young, Head of Customer and Communications who presented the certificates said he was really impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm shown: “I am delighted to have an opportunity to recognise the achievements.

“I hope that they will sustain their love of books and reading and continue to make good use of the tremendous range of resources available at their local library.”

Other partners involved in the programme are the Learning Providers in Ashfield Valley, Hamer, Heybrook & St John’s RC Primary schools, South Street Nursery and Durnford Street LearnLocal centre

There is still time to sign up for the challenge as it is an ongoing initiative, simply visit your local library or learn local centre for more information visit: www.rochdale.gov.uk/libraries
