Brothers in family knife terror

Date published: 10 July 2009

Two brothers are in intensive care after being stabbed by their cousin during a vicious family feud.

Mohammed Asif Khan, 18, was stabbed close to his heart, while his brother Mohammed Ayaz Khan, 20, suffered a punctured lung, outside the family home in Folly Walk, off Lomax Street, at 7.00pm last night (Thursday 9 July).

The pair were trying to protect their father from the knifeman, their cousin Jameel Khan.

Jamil Khan’s uncle is believed to have hit him in a bid to discipline him when he caught him in possession of alcohol, which is forbidden in Islamic teaching.

Jamil Khan is then believed to have returned home, collected a knife and set out to confront his uncle at his home in Folly Walk. He was met by the two brothers, his cousins, outside the house.

Witnesses report “screaming and shouting” on the street.

A neighbour from Folly Walk, who did not want to be named, said: “There was a lot of screaming and shouting outside, I went to look out of the window but all I could see is that they were fighting.

“This is usually a quiet place, the only noise you get is from kids playing on the road. It beggars belief that there should be a stabbing on the doorstep like this.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “Police attended Folly Walk after reports of a stabbing.”

Mohammed Ayaz Khan is in the critical care ward at Rochdale Infirmary and is awaiting emergency surgery.

Mohammed Asif Khan is recovering in Wythenshawe Hospital on a specialised cardio ward.

An arrest has been made in connection with the incident.
