Jazz Night in Littleborough

Date published: 25 May 2007

Saturday 2 June sees the the Dave Donohoe Band at The Wine Press, Hollingworth Lake, Littleborough. The Jazz Night has been organised by Rochdale Rotary Club as a fund raiser for local charity, the Rochdale Connections Trust.

The North West is famed for its vibrant music scene and has fostered a host of imaginative jazz characters. Its healthy jazz scene reflects the varied landscape of the region. It caters for wide range of tastes including New Bossa and New Orleans, Big Bands and Bebop.

Jazz Festivals in the region include Wigan International, Manchester and the dynamic Lancaster each September.

There are over 80 venues in Greater Manchester including the RNCM, The Bridgewater Hall, Matt and Phred's Jazz Club in the Northern Quarter, and The Cinnamon Club. The county also boasts a flourishing pub jazz scene which plays host to some of the nation's finest players, and sits alongside the cutting edge work emanating from the Manchester city centre.

In the adjoining county of Lancashire there are the ever-popular weekly sessions at the Rhythm Station in Rawtenstall; a wide programme of world jazz at The Platform in Morecambe; the well-respected Burnley Summer School in the last week of July and the Jam Factory, the region's biggest community big band.

Dave Donohoe believes that New Orleans music is not only "hot music", but also "sweet music", romantic and even sentimental. He syas: "It’s essentially a folk music by the people for the people. New Orleans music is not just a collection of tunes, but a language in which you can say everything that comes to your mind. Therefore it pays to look over the fence now and then and add songs from other kinds of music to the repertoire."

The Band has had the advantage of learning the music not only from the records, but also from the personal contact with the originators. Today they are the keepers of the flame of true New Orleans jazz.

The Dave Donohoe Band is appearing at The Wine Press, Hollingworth Lake, Saturday, 2 June. Tickets £17.50 including supper. Tickets available at the Wine Press or from Dean Sherriff on 01706 364981.
