Youngsters in eye-opening demonstration

Date published: 05 July 2009

Youngsters who don’t wear their seatbelts were urged to think twice by fire fighters yesterday (Saturday 4 July), as they were cut out of a car in an eye-opening demonstration.

Crews chopped and cut into the vehicles as the young people from Syke Community Base sat inside, as if they were in a real situation.

To make the experience even more realistic, they were carried out in spinal boards and lifted to safety, while officers explained to them to different real-life situations they have dealt with.

A previous group, also from Syke Community Base, were also given the same real-life experience when they visited on 27 June.

White Watch Commander from Rochdale Fire Station, Paul Wilkinson said: “It is educational for the kids and hopefully it is interesting as they find out a bit more about what we do.

He added: “Both days were very successful with live casualties from the community base being extricated from vehicles in simulated collisions.

“The volunteers then explained to the other visitors their experience of the noises and sensations real casualties feel following such incidents.”
