Langley falls awareness day

Date published: 21 June 2009

A day highlighting the single biggest cause of accidental death in older people is being held in Langley this week.

One person dies every five hours as a result of a fall in the home and local landlord Riverside Pennine feels raising awareness of falls is a critical issue

In conjunction with Age Concern and Help the Aged, Riverside will be hosting its fourth National Falls Awareness Day in Langley, Middleton. The day will aim to raise awareness about the risks of falls among older people and to promote simple practical ways that can reduce the risks of falls and fractures.

Among the attractions on offer on the day are free health checks, free hand, neck and feet massages, free slippers, information stalls, free refreshments and musical entertainment in the form of a tribute to Frank Sinatra.

Sharon Thomas, Community Initiative Team Leader for Riverside said: “Falls can have a devastating effect on an older persons life.

“Holding a day that raises awareness about this issue for all our residents and offering support and giving advice about staying fit, safe, healthy and independent into later life is invaluable.”

This year’s event is in partnership with Contour Homes with support from Abbey and will be held on Tuesday 23 June 2009, 11.00am – 2.00pm at Our Lady’s Social Club on Wood Street, Langley.

If anyone requires transportation to the event please contact Partnerships for Older People Project (POPPS) on 01706 926666.
