Norden Carnival 2009

Date published: 20 June 2009

The dismal weather may stop the cricket this weekend but the rain could not put a dampener on Norden Carnival. Hundreds turned out to take part in the carnival and hundreds more lined the route as the procession weaved its way from Caldershaw School up through Norden Village and back down to Norden Community School.

Leading the parade were Mayor Keith Swift and Mayoress Sue Etchells, accompanied by MP Jim Dobbin and Norden Councillors Ann Metcalfe and Jim Gartside. Councillor Wera Hobhouse was to be found swinging a donation bucket half way down the procession.

A lot of work had gone into the splendid floats and there were plenty of spectacular outfits, with bright colours and inventive ideas in abundance. One shop enroute had even decked out the shop window with mannequins dressed as the X-Factor judges!

A fair with lots of different rides and stalls, along with music from Birch Radio and live music from local band The Shameless greeted the crowds as they arrived at Norden Community School.

Mayor Swift said he thoroughly enjoyed leading the parade and judging the children's fancy dress competition.

MP Jim Dobbin said: "I am delighted to support this well organised and popular carnival. It is always a joy and today has been no exception."
