Safe and secure on All Saints Terrace

Date published: 20 June 2009

Rochdale Borough Council has has carried out extensive work, cleaning up litter, removing fly-tipped rubbish and pruning back foliage to improve life for residents on All Saints Terrace after reports highlighted the seriousness of the problems they were experiencing.

To try and curb antisocial behaviour the council have installed a barrier which stops unauthorised vehicles from causing a disturbance at night. There are also plans to install improved street lighting and CCTV.

Local residents Brent Lever and Anne Howard say they are much happier now that the barrier is up. “Life is a lot better and quieter. I feel much safer and I can sleep better at night. It was all too much to bear a few months ago but since the council has taken action many of the problems have stopped” said Mr Lever. “The barrier is proving to be a really good deterrent. People have stopped dumping their rubbish and cars don’t come late at night anymore,” explained Mrs Lever.

Lee Durrant, Community Safety Officer for Rochdale Borough Council, said:”We do not want people living frightened in their own homes and so we will do whatever we can to improve their quality of life.

“We have been listening to residents’ problems and working with them to decide appropriate solutions. We are confident that the new barrier, CCTV and the clean-ups in the area will prove to residents that improving community safety is our priority, we will work hard to protect them from crime but also to help them feel safe.”

MP Paul Rowen added: “When I was made aware of the problems that local residents were experiencing, I called a meeting between myself, local councillors and council representatives to end the misery yobs were causing residents on All Saints Terrace. I am pleased that the council took such swift action by introducing a whole host of security measures into the area that ensures the long-term safety of residents. I will carry on monitoring the situation and I hope that the barrier and the new measures proposed will improve lives.”

Cabinet member for community safety, Ted Flynn said: “Putting resident’s safety first has to be the priority for our Council and I am delighted that we have managed to secure the new safety measures. I hope that local residents will now feel a lot safer in their homes.”
