Hats off to Ascot fundraisers

Date published: 18 June 2009

A day of posh frocks and fancy hats, Rochdale Ascot Day was a milestone celebration.

Now in its fifth year, staff at the NSPCC Rochdale branch are expecting to reach their long-awaited goal of raising a massive £20,000, solely through the race charity day which takes place at Nutters Restaurant each year.

Today’s event (Thursday 18 June) raised £5,601.80 and has been yet another sell-out, suggesting a continued success.

Treasurer John Kay said: “I am happy it has been another sell-out. We have 170 people here today and we have met our previous goal of £5000.

“We would be especially pleased this year, as it would take us to £20,000 since we started the event five years ago.

“All proceeds go to the NSPCC Rochdale branch, so it would be wonderful to reach that target.”

NSPCC Community fundraiser, Natalie Coverley said: “The Rochdale Ascot Day already has a name for itself for being a success every year.

“If we reach the £20,000 this year it will be a cause for even more celebration than usual, it is an amazing success and an insight into the generosity and of charitable local people.”

Event organiser Lis Kay said: “When we started this event we were expected to raise about £1000.

“But people have been so wonderfully generous, and it makes me happy to say we could reach the £20,000 mark in just the fifth year.”
