Teen carjacking ordeal

Date published: 15 June 2009

Thieves clasped a teenage motorist by the head and lugged him from his driving seat, before making off in his car.

Two men in balaclavas targeted the 18-year-old victim as he sat in his white Peugeot 106, making a call on his mobile phone, before opening the door and forcing him out.

One of the offenders then drove off in the victim's car and the other got away in the white Ford. The victim's car was later found abandoned on Deeplish Road.

Luckily, the victim managed to run to safety, but police in Rochdale are now appealing for witnesses.

Detective Constable Tim O'Callaghan, of Rochdale CID, said: "The victim was understandably terrified to be confronted by these men when making a call on his mobile phone in the safety of his own car, but did the right thing by not trying to fight back otherwise he could have been attacked and seriously injured.

"I would appeal to anyone in the community who has information about this car jacking, or who perhaps saw the cars being driven at speed at about the time of the robbery, to come forward."

Anyone with information should call Rochdale CID on 0161 856 4646 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
