Drugs burglary sparks police hunt (Middleton)

Date published: 11 June 2009

Burglars forced a chemist door open with a crowbar before stealing a large quantity of dangerous drugs.

Strong pain killers and stimulants were among the medicines taken from the Lloyds Pharmacy on Rochdale Road, in the early hours of Wednesday morning (10 June).

Police say the drugs could be fatal if landed in the wrong hands.

The offenders tried to dismantle the alarm but failed. They managed to get into the stockroom, ransacked it and stole two controlled drugs cupboards.

It is believed the burglars may have escaped in a white Transit-type van.

Police are now appealing to anyone who has information about the burglary to come forward, and also warning members of the public to be vigilant and not to take any of the drugs if they are offered.

Police Constable Martin Johnston, based at Middleton Police Station, said: "I cannot overstate just how dangerous these medications are without being taken under the guidance of a doctor.

"If you know of the whereabouts of them or are offered them, please contact police immediately."

Anyone with information is asked to call police in Middleton on 0161 856 8777 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
