Rotary clubs walk for Polio Plus

Date published: 08 June 2009

The joint rotary clubs of Rochdale and Rochdale East arranged a sponsored walk at Hollingworth Lake yesterday afternoon (Sunday 7 June).

More than 50 people took part wearing "End Polio Now" t-shirts.

Each walker received a certificate for their efforts and all profits will go to the Polio Plus Project to eradicate polio from the four remaining countries where it is endemic - India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria.

This was the rotary club's second fundraiser in a week after they 'sent a cow' to Africa on Thursday (4 June). They presented a cheque for £750 to the 'Send a Cow' project, which runs sustainable agricultural programmes in nine countries in Africa to help small-scale farmers overcome poverty and malnutrition.

They were founded in 1988 by a group of UK farmers who sent cows to families in post-conflict Uganda.
