A new health campaign is encouraging people to practice simple steps to help stop the spread of flu and other viruses.
Research has revealed that many people don’t understand the huge difference using and disposing of tissues correctly and washing hands can make in helping prevent the spread of the common cold and more serious flu virus.
The ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ campaign has been launched by the Department of Health to raise awareness. Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale PCT has distributed posters to health centres, clinics across the borough and the Walk-in Centre at Rochdale to spread the message.
Bernadine O’Sullivan, Public Health Consultant at HMR PCT, says: “Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough and sneeze, disposing of the tissue as soon as possible and cleaning your hands as soon as you can makes a big difference to stop the spread of germs.
“We all have an important role in preventing ourselves, our families and others from spreading germs. These simple steps can make a big difference to our health and the health of those around us.”
The messages of Catch It, Bin It, Kill It, are simple:
• CATCH IT – Germs spread easily. Always carry tissues and use them to catch your cough or sneeze.
• BIN IT – Germs can live for several hours on tissues. Dispose of them as soon as possible.
• KILL IT – Hands can transfer germs to any surface you touch. Clean your hands as soon as you can.
