Fury at heavy goods racket
Date published: 04 June 2009
A row has sparked over the opening of a large industrial business in a quiet residential area.
Residents say they haven’t slept since the business, which handles fashion retail garments, opened on Ogden Lane, Milnrow, with a flow of heavy goods vehicles pulling into the site day and night.
Anger has been expressed that the business, which operates all but three hours during the night, is up and running before the Council has had a chance to discuss it.
Norma Kershaw, who lives on Huddersfield Road, said: “Not one of us has had a night’s sleep since this began.
“I can’t even have my windows open. And I am being shaken in my bed by heavy vehicles passing day and night.”
Councillor Irene Davidson said: “This matter should have come to the committee way before this stage. I am annoyed that the business is already up and running when it shouldn’t be.”
“I am also annoyed that there is a 24-hour business operating so close to residents, but unfortunately this committee is not in the right positions to make a decision.”
More controversy emerged over the safety of the increased traffic on the site, but applicant, speaking for Lloyd Fraser Logistics, promised to pay for signs to be put up on the “difficult” junction.
Eight houses are said to be directly affected by the noise.
The proposal, for a change of use from general industry to storage and distribution, has been deferred.
