Date published: 03 June 2009
The Demesne Community Centre's Mal McCall was crowned Rochdale's Exceptional Volunteer of the Year at an event at Rochdale Town Hall last night (Tuesday 2 June).
Ms McCall was awarded for her outstanding work at the centre in Middleton, which organises various social activities for the elderly, children and young people.
Other winners on the night were Andrew Anstess from the Backdoor Music Project (Most Committed Young Volunteer of the Year), Rebecca Mason from Bumps and Babies (Exceptional Young Volunteer of the Year), the Burnside Community Centre (Best Youth Volunteering Organisation), “The Dynamic Duo” Kath Burns and Mildred Sutcliffe from Springhill Hospice (Exceptional Older Volunteers of the Year) and The Befrienders, Making Space Project (Exceptional Groups of Volunteers).
The event was held as part of National Volunteers’ Week, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
The awards evening was held to acknowledge the contribution made by volunteers throughout Rochdale and to thank them publicly, highlighting the difference their input makes to their local communities and to individuals.
Voluntary and Community Sector groups were asked to nominate volunteers who they thought deserved to win an award and local councillors were invited to judge the nominations from the information provided by the nominating organisation.
The event was attended by the Mayor Councillor Keith Swift and Mayoress Sue Etchells, the Youth MP Usman Nawaz, councillors and council officers, members of CVS organisation and nominators and, most importantly, volunteers.
All those nominated received a certificate and the winners of each category got a certificate, a gift token and a trophy.
