Traffic backlog after motorbike smash

Date published: 02 June 2009

Witnesses watched in shock as a motorbike collision sent a man “flying across the road” today (Tuesday 2 June).

Paramedics and police officers attended the scene at the Texaco Garage on Bolton Road, Marland, after Honda CBR bike, travelling at high speed, collided with a Vauxhall Astra which was turning into the petrol station.

The cyclist is believed to have suffered fractures and a broken leg, and has been taken to Rochdale Infirmary.

Traffic was being turned away from the scene, and there was a heavy backlog between Marland and Tesco, Sudden, but the flow is now running steady.

Four 471 buses, with passengers, were queued up at the bus stop across the road.

Tom Wilson was walking on the pavement when the accident happened.

He said: “I could hear the bike but couldn’t see anything, it looked like to rider of the bike saw it coming and tried to veer away, but he hit the car side on and went flying across the road.”

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: “We have had to turn traffic away while the scene is cleaned up.

“The motorcyclist is not suffering from life threatening injuries but he has suffered fractures and a broken leg.”
