Thousands say 'no' to golf driving range
Date published: 29 May 2009
The proposal for a golf driving range at Springfield Park has been opposed by almost 3000 people.
The strong public opinion was made clear by a survey out by Friends of Springfield Park, which collected 2,800 signatures against the plans, and just eight who were in favour.
A leaflet was distributed which asked people to choose between the golf driving range or a ‘vision for the future’, detailing improvements which could be made to the park’s facilities.
Among the signatures are those of Councillors Farooq Ahmed and Ann Metcalfe.
Colin Wilkinson, of Friends of Springfield Park, told Rochdale Online how an “overwhelming majority” of people, mostly from Heywood, Castleton and Milkstone and Deeplish, do not want the range to go ahead.
He said: “We have discovered a very strong opinion through the consultation at the Town Hall and through the leaflet which we distributed.
“There were a number of people who didn’t know about this driving range, and as soon as they got the leaflet they immediately disapproved.
“The people want a park, not a golf driving range, and it is the people we should be listening to.”
A further questionnaire was handed out at Matthew Moss High School, but the results have not yet been concluded.
Andrew Whitehead, Environmental Management Performance & Development Manager at the Council, said: "I think we would all agree that this is a fantastic response and can all be encouraged that so many people take an interest and want to have their say in the future of the park.
"In addition to the questionnaires, children who attended the visioning day have also made an important contribution in terms of models and banners they have made and some great ideas for play equipment. This feedback will also be included in the report."
A Link4Life spokesperson said: “There has been extensive consultation and discussion on the proposals for Springfield Park with local people over past months and this will continue.
“Rochdale Borough Council will ensure that this feedback is reflected in future planning proposals.”
Further consultations will be made at Castleton Community Centre on Monday and Tuesday between 9.00am and 6.00pm.
