Doctor's surgery to be moved

Date published: 28 May 2009

A doctor’s surgery is to be moved to a new building to cope with an increase in patients and services.

Rochdale Township Committee agreed that Wellfield Surgery, on Oldham Road, has outgrown its current building, and that the Council-owned land should be exchanged for a derelict industrial unit at Canal Street.

Wellfield Surgery is one of the largest in Rochdale, serving over 13,000 patients, and has been seeking to relocate and expand for some time.

The doctors are willing to build a new facility and have secured part funding from the Primary Care Trust to assist them.

John Taylor, from Rochdale Development Agency, told the committee last night (Wednesday 27 May) : “We have been working with the doctors to bring the site forward for development.

“This is one of the biggest doctor’s practices in Rochdale, and the current building is no longer fit for purpose."

The decision was agreed, and has been sent to cabinet for financial details.
