Twin town artist brings paintings to Rochdale

Date published: 26 May 2009

Harald Schuppe, a professional artist living and working in Rochdale’s twin town of Bielefeld in Germany, opened a new exhibition at Touchstones on Saturday (23 May).

The exhibition was officially opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of Rochdale and the launch was attended by the Friends of Bielefeld.

The exhibition, called 'Across the Channel', runs until 14 June in Gallery One. Admission is free.

Harald Schuppe said: “I believe that the intercultural dialogue at the moment is more important than ever. Globalisation seems to create one united world, but it is only the unity of the market. Especially in between the global financial crisis the common people start again to protect only their own properties and may begin to mistrust the stranger. When we want to ensure that peace survives, we must give the power of intercultural dialogue a chance. So I like to be here in Rochdale as a ‘cultural ambassador’ of my home town Bielefeld in Germany.”

Schuppe’s paintings are made using acrylics and encompass abstract and surrealist themes with a striking use of colour.

All the works at Touchstones are for sale.

Since 1984 Schuppe has participated in individual and group exhibitions, art auctions and art fairs in Bielefeld and other regions of Germany as well as in Russia, Nicaragua, Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Poland, U.S.A. and China. Now he can add Rochdale to the list too.

Touchstones Rochdale is is located on The Esplanade in the town centre. It is open Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm, Sundays and Bank Holidays 12noon-4.30pm.
