Hundreds to join in Christian walk
Date published: 23 May 2009
Rochdale churchgoers will join hundreds of walkers on Monday (25 May) for the traditional Manchester Whit Walk.
St. Margaret’s Church, Heywood, and All Saints & Martyrs, Langley, will be among 13 other churches in the walk, which celebrates the day Christians believe God sent a commandment to spread the faith.
The churches are expected to carry banners through the city centre streets from three locations gathering at an open-air service outside Manchester town hall. The service will be led by the Very Rev Rogers Govender, the Dean of Manchester, with the Bishop of Middleton, The Rt Revd Mark Davies preaching.
The Dean said, “We hope to have a good turn-out this year, with banners and bands and hundreds of people. This is a unique march, supporting and representing communities across Manchester.
The various marches set off all morning with s special procession leaving the Cathedral at 10am. Hundreds will gather outside the Town hall, in Albert square, for a service at 10.45am.
