New Mayor hits the right note

Date published: 20 May 2009

Councillor Keith Swift broke into song last night (Wednesday 20 May) as he accepted his post as the new Mayor of Rochdale.

A semi-professional singer and music lover, Rochdale’s new First Citizen couldn’t help but entertain the crowd during his speech at the Mayor Making Ceremony at the Town Hall.

Key figures from across the borough came to witness the ceremony, including Rochdale MP Paul Rowen, councillors from all parties, and the Chief Superintendent of Greater Manchester Police, Rochdale Divisional Commander, John O’Hare.

Councillor Swift has served on the Council for 12 years, and has been Chair of Pennines Township Committee, Cabinet Member for Townships and Corporate Management, Equality and Diversity Champion.

Conservative Leader Ashley Dearnley said: “I am delighted that Keith Swift is the new Mayor of Rochdale.

“He is a hard working, conscientious member of the Council, one who will always be prepared to stand up and be counted.

“Our mayor will certainly bring his own style to the job properly.”

Councillor Linda Robinson said: “To be mayor is an awarding and busy role to take. I believe Keith will take on this role very well.

“I have been a councillor for ten years and have supported every Mayor, regardless of political background. I hope and believe our new mayor will be just as impartial.

“I have made him promise he will not sing in the council chamber.”

Mayor of Rochdale, Councillor Keith Swift said: “I am privileged and proud to be mayor of this wonderful borough, and I would like to thank every one of you for your support.

“Especially past Mayors who have given me the advice and guidance needed to take on this role as Rochdale’s First Citizen.”

“I would like to spend my Mayoral year giving to support to young people in the way I love best – music. That is why I have decided to support the Back Door Music Project, Rochdale Music Service, and Rochdale Youth Orchestra.”
