Hospice plans unusual ‘Vertical Marathon’

Date published: 13 May 2009

Springhill Hospice is calling for people to get their sprinting shoes on and take the steps to success, in a ‘Vertical Sprint’ up the Black Box.

As part of their 20th Anniversary celebrations, the Rochdale charity is holding the challenging event, on Sunday 21 June.

The first of its kind in Rochdale, the ‘Vertical Sprint’ is a race against time, up twelve floors of the Municipal Building.

Ian Jenkins, Fundraising Manager, explains, “I was made aware of an event that takes place in Singapore every year called the ‘Vertical Marathon’ where individuals race up the 73-storey Swissôtel building and thought that perhaps we could bring such an unusual event to Rochdale. We don’t perhaps have 73 storeys to tackle, but I am sure that the 12 we do have are enough of a challenge.

“We are looking for each participant to register for just £5.00 and would ask that they obtain sponsorship to both celebrate our 20 year milestone and to help raise vital funds during what is sure to be a difficult year.”

The event will take place on Sunday 21st June commencing at 11:00am when each participant will get three attempts to achieve their best time. Interested parties should contact the Hospice Fundraising team on 01706 649920 – or at fundraising@springhillhospice.nhs.uk - to receive a registration form.
