Cabbie’s pistol terror (Heywood)

Date published: 11 May 2009

A brave taxi driver fended off would-be robbers who pressed a pistol to his head and tried to strangle him in Heywood.

Two attackers were picked up on Yew Street on Thursday night when they demanded they were taken to Lewis Drive.

The 41-year-old driver drove to the destination, only to find a pistol pressed to his head, and hands around his neck.

Luckily, he broke free and called for help on his radio when the attack happened at 11.50pm.

Both men got out of the car and ran off empty handed, over a grassy area towards Sutherland Road.

Detective Constable Tim O'Callaghan, from Rochdale Robbery Unit, said: "This was an incredibly frightening experience for the taxi driver.

"He was not injured but did lose his night's wages as he had to go home from work.

“We need to get this gun off the streets, as it might be a life that somebody loses next time.

"If you know anything that might help us catch those responsible, please contact me."

Anyone with information is asked to call the Rochdale Robbery Unit on 0161 856 8632 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
