Gastric flu NOT swine flu
Date published: 02 May 2009
Rumours of a case of swine flu supposedly confirmed in Rochdale are unfounded.
A pupil at Oulder Hill School, who recently returned with his parents from a holiday in Mexico, was sent home from school with suspected swine flu on Thursday (30 April) but tests have shown the boy has gastric flu and definitely not swine flu.
Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale NHS (formerly known as the Primary Care Trust) and Rochdale Borough Council implemented full emergency procedures as a precaution.
Council Executive Director Andy Zuntz has confirmed the boy has gastric flu, he said: “I can confirm the boy has gastric flu and not swine flu.
“Rumours of a ‘cover up’ are unfounded; the council would not be a party to a cover up.
“We are pleased our emergency response has been tested and proved effective."
Dr Sheila Will, director of public health at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, said: “The NHS is very well prepared in the event the virus spread more widely and we will make sure that we keep people fully informed of what is happening locally.
“The most important way we can all help limit the spread of any infection, including flu viruses, is to follow basic hygiene rules. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then dispose of the tissue, and wash your hands regularly.
“If you are suffering from symptoms which could be flu (high fever, tired muscles, sore throat) don't go to your GP or Accident & Emergency Department, as you will risk spreading the virus to other people. Instead stay at home, call your GP or contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. People who have these symptoms should drink plenty of fluids, rest and take paracetamol to control any fever.”
