Pedalling against crime in Heywood

Date published: 01 May 2009

Local housing association, Guinness Northern Counties have donated a bike to the Heywood Neighbourhood Policing Team.

It is hoped the bike, valued at £159.99, will improve the service officers deliver to members of the Darnhill community.

The bike was presented to the neighbourhood inspector and the PCSO from the team by Craig Warren, area manager for Guinness Northern Counties and housing officer, Lorraine Sykes, at Shepherds Cycles on Tuesday (28 April).

Inspector Darrell Butterworth, for Heywood Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We are grateful to Guinness Northern Counties for providing us with the bike. This will be a great tool, which we will be able to use in the Darnhill estate.

"It will enable police and Police Community Support Officers to get around the estate quickly and patrol while still being accessible to the public in places that cars can’t reach like parks and back alleyways.

Lorraine Sykes, housing officer for Guinness Northern Counties, said: “In two years of working with PCSO Jennifer George I have seen a significant decrease in levels of anti-social behaviour and crime on the streets of Darnhill. If by donating a bicycle to Heywood Neighbourhood Policing Team we can assist then this is very good value for money.”
