Greek feast for charity diners

Date published: 01 May 2009

A night of plate smashing, free ouzo and live Bouzouki music raised £1,250 at a charity Greek Night.

More than 100 guests enjoyed a true Greek experience at Demetris Cafe and Bistro, based at The Littleborough Coach House in Lodge Street, with a 10-course meze buffet of Greek cuisine followed by traditional Greek dancing to live Bouzouki music played throughout the night. Guests even did their own dishes, Greek-style, by smashing them on the floor.

Money raised from the event is being donated to MedEquip4Kids, which raises money to provide medical equipment for the Children’s Unit at Rochdale Infirmary helping to ensure children and babies receive the best possible care when sick or injured.

The charity has raised more than £30,000 in the last five years for the unit, including more than £8,000 to provide syringe pumps to administer drugs in very precise quantities to babies and small children.

Boosting the final fundraising total at the Greek Night was a raffle which raised £200, featuring prizes including a bottle of brandy and Virgin V products, while an auction raised an additional £300 for prizes such as a chauffeur driven wedding car with picnic, a round of golf for four at Mottram Hall and signed celebrity photographs.

MedEquip4Kids' community fundraiser, Rachel Allen, said: "I would like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at Demetris Cafe and Bistro for pulling out all the stops and working so tirelessly to make the Greek Night such a success.

"It was a wonderful night, the food was fantastic, and everyone I spoke to thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The money raised for MedEquip4Kids was incredible and I was overwhelmed with the guests' generosity. Thank you to everyone who attended."
