Swine flu leaflet distributed next week

Date published: 01 May 2009

From next week, every household in the country will receive a leaflet called 'Important Information About Swine Flu'.

This leaflet will explain how people can protect themselves against swine flu and what to do if the disease becomes more widespread.

To keep the public informed about swine flu developments, a mass public health campaign has also started, covering print, TV and radio adverts.

The adverts warn the public about swine flu and remind people to cover their noses and mouths with tissues when they cough and sneeze, and then throw the tissue away and wash their hands.

The message behind the campaign reads: 'CATCH IT. BIN IT. KILL IT'.

Members of the public who want further information can ring a single number, 0800 1 513 513, for regular recorded updates on the current situation.

Dr Sheila Will, director of public health at NHS Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale, said: “The most important way we can all help limit the spread of any infection, including flu viruses, is to follow basic hygiene rules. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then dispose of the tissue, and wash your hands regularly.

“If you are suffering from symptoms which could be flu (high fever, tired muscles and sore throat) don't go to your GP or Accident & Emergency Department, as you will risk spreading the virus to other people. Instead stay at home, call your GP or contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47. People who have these symptoms should drink plenty of fluids, rest and take paracetamol to control any fever.

“The NHS is very well prepared in the event the virus spreads more widely and we will make sure that we keep people fully informed of what is happening locally.”
