Meals on Wheels, a service providing hot meals to the elderly and vulnerable, is facing an uncertain future as the Rochdale Borough Council calls it in for review.
Hundreds of elderly residents currently rely on the service which is provided to them buy volunteers.
Speculations have been made that the review is an attempt to cut costs, but details are yet to be discussed and no decision has yet been made.
The topic will be brought up at tonight’s Full Council meeting.
Stephen Williams, Interim Head of Transformation at Rochdale Borough Council said: “The Meals on Wheels service is currently under review. There are a number of options being considered for the future of the service but no decision has yet been made.”
Councillor Dale Mulgrew said: “As a council we will be continuing to support the meals on wheels service, as we have done in the past.
“However, as is council procedure, we will be reviewing a variety of adult care services across the board.
Councillor Mulgrew added: “This council has an excellent track record of working with the voluntary sector.
“Meals on wheels is a much valued service and I would like to congratulate the Woman’s Royal Voluntary Group for all their efforts in providing it.
We will continue to work alongside them in the future to provide a variety of services across Rochdale”.
Rochdale Online News will report on the outcome of tonight’s meeting.
