A Castleton man who stopped would-be thieves in their tracks would do exactly the same again despite having to spend the next six weeks with his leg in plaster after he was injured during the chase.
Carl Rigg, 29, of Knoll Street, disturbed thieves that had broken into the Newtown National Club on Nixon Street, ensuring that they got away with nothing. Mr Rigg ran round the back of the club to try and get to where the thieves broke in. To do so he had to jump down a 10ft drop, and now he has his leg in plaster after sustaining ankle ligament damage in the fall.
Despite his injuries he maintains that he will always try and prevent crime himself. "I would do it again, the same as I would always try to help anybody. The owners of the club were kind enough to buy me a crate of beer for preventing the robbery but that wasn't why I did it.
"As soon as I had phoned 999, me and my neighbour went to try and stop these lads so that the police could arrest them. Unfortunately they soon vanished once we disturbed them but they didn't get away with anything which is something.
"I would never turn away from someone doing something wrong, I will always intervene."
