Swine flu high alert – ‘just a precaution’

Date published: 28 April 2009

Health chiefs are on high alert to ensure swine flu doesn’t break out locally; Primary Care Trust bosses met this morning (Tuesday 28 April) to discuss the possibility of a local outbreak after a scare in the Manchester area.

North Manchester General Hospital has an Infectious Diseases Unit ready to deal with possible breakouts of the disease.

But the PCT has insisted there is no need to panic, and that such an event is “unlikely”.

A spokesman said: “there is no pandemic. There is no need for anyone to worry. In the worst case scenario, we have enough treatment ready.”

He added: “If anyone does think they have swine flu, please treat it as normal flu. Ring the doctor’s surgery instead of visiting it”.

“The most important way we can all help limit to spread of any infection – including flu viruses – is to follow basic hygiene rules. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then dispose of the tissue, and wash your hands regularly.

If you are suffering from symptoms which could be flu (high fever, tired muscles, sore throat and in some case diarrhoea and vomiting) don't go to your GP - you will risk spreading the virus to other people.

“Stay at home, call your GP or contact NHS Direct on 0845 46 47 or via the web at www.nhs.uk.

"People who have the symptoms should also drink plenty of fluids, rest and take paracetamol to control any fever.”
