The Mayor, Councillor Peter Evans, and Mayoress, Mrs Helen Evans, will visit St Edward's Primary School, Castleton, next week to present Year 6 pupils with the winner's trophy for the Go-Ride Event at this year's Rochdale Grand Prix.

St Edward's was one of six primary school teams in the borough to reach the cycle skills showdown, which took place on South Parade before the main race.

Team St Edward's squeezed past teams from Woodlands Primary in Heywood and Shawclough Community Primary in Rochdale to snatch victory on a tough course featuring a slalom, limbo bar and fast turns.

As an extra prize, all St Edward's Year 6 pupils are off to the Manchester Velodrome to get special track sessions with professionals from the National Cycling Centre. The Go-Ride Junior Event was sponsored by the Rochdale Exchange Shopping Centre.

Woodland Primary School, Regent Street, Heywood came second and the team from Shawclough Community Primary School, Thrum Hall Lane, Rochdale came third. The other schools who competed in the race were: St John' RC Primary and Nursery School, Rochdale; Little Heaton CE Primary, Middleton; and Sandbrook Community Primary, Rochdale.
