Anger at fly-tipping mess
Date published: 06 April 2009
Piles of dumped waste has caused outrage among local residents after children were seen using it to play on.
Elizabeth Wood, of Sparthbottoms Road, has complained to Rochdale Borough Council about the “rubbish upon rubbish” which has been growing at the side of her house for weeks.
But so far the only thing that has changed is the size of the problem.
Mrs Wood, who has seven grandchildren regularly coming to visit, was shocked to find young children climbing on the smelly heaps and obliviously rustling around.
She told Rochdale Online News: “At first there was a small problem, now it is chaos.
“There are children in the area who have been playing on the rubbish, which is just getting bigger all the time.
“The council doesn’t seem overly bothered”.
Rochdale Borough Council has confirmed they are dealing with the issue and plans to take action.
A council spokeswoman said: “We are dealing with this, and we will serve notice to the landowner and ask that they make arrangements to remove the fly tipped waste.
“The landowner will have seven working days from the council serving notice to clear the waste, or make arrangements to clear it within the given timescale. Should the landowner fail to do so, the council will carry out the clean up operation and charge the landowner in default”.
Should anyone wish to report a grot spot, please report it to the council by calling 0845 226 1800 or email environmental.management@rochdale.gov.uk
