St Andrews Primary eggsperts

Date published: 03 April 2009

If you want to make sure you buy chocolate eggs that provide the best value for money this Easter, ask pupils at St Andrews Primary School.

Pupils at the school know eggsactly which chocolate eggs are the most reasonably priced, adequately sized; have the most attractive and environmentally-friendly packaging and, most importantly, are the tastiest.

The £2.50 Aero Easter Egg was voted best overall. This medium sized egg beat tough competition from the smaller £1.50 Cadbury’s Button egg and the larger Mars egg costing £3.50.

Each year an Easter competition is run throughout Greater Manchester by trading standards services and is designed to test pupils’ skills in literacy, numeracy and science when considering the very important purchase of Easter eggs.

As part of an Easter competition, children at St Andrews Primary School produced a lively and colourful display that was used as evidence for what they deemed to be the best value and worst value for money Easter eggs this year. Their thorough critiques meant they scooped first prize in the local heats across the borough as well as emerging third out of all the schools across Greater Manchester.

Andy Glover, Trading Standards Manager at Rochdale Council, said: “There is an important lesson to be learnt by taking part in this fun Easter competition. It teaches young children about the concept of ‘value for money’. The pupils at St Andrews Primary have shown they understand that quality is not always determined by price.”

Mrs Towse, Headteacher at St Andrews Primary School, said: “The children have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the competition, especially the tasting sessions! They are delighted that their displays have been so successful in both heats and now consider themselves Easter egg experts!"

Rochdale Council attended the school’s assembly earlier today (Friday 3 April) and presented the children with cadbury’s cream eggs to reward their efforts and gave the school a DVD player for being so successful in the competition.
