Long Service Labour man honoured

Date published: 17 July 2007

George Cousin has been honoured for having served well over 60 years membership of Rochdale Labour Party.

At a party at his family’s home in Whitlees Road, Littleborough, to celebrate his 92nd birthday, Mr Cousin received a Long Service Award from Heywood amp; Middleton MP Jim Dobbin. He also received a personal birthday card from Tony Blair, which read: “George, have a great birthday and thank you for all the hard work you’ve put in for the Labour Party, Tony Blair.” He also received a bottle of House of Commons whisky personally signed by Gordon Brown, Prime Minister.

Mr Cousin was originally from Tyneside, but moved to Rochdale after the Second World War, to work in metal work. He eventually worked in confectionary and baking, including spending time at the Co-op’s Bakery in Rochdale. He was also an active trade unionist.

Jim Dobbin MP said: “George, you are a legend in the Rochdale Labour Party and a real credit to the Labour movement.”

Simon Danczuk, Rochdale’s Labour Parliamentary Candidate, said: "George has never stopped fighting for Labour and what he believes in. He’s an exceptionally passionate political person who believes in helping his fellow man. George is a real inspiration to us. I’ve enjoyed many chats about campaigns he’s been involved in and his experiences on Tyneside when he was younger. He’s an absolute star!”

Mr Cousin said: “It’s probably one of the best birthdays I’ve had, surrounded by my family, friends, and Labour Party colleagues.”
