Primary school improvement across the borough

Date published: 02 April 2009

Rochdale's primary school pupils are performing above the national average in English, maths and science and have done better than last year according to latest league tables.

The tables show the results achieved by pupils at Key Stage Two level during their final year of primary school.

The town has improved on last year's results, up seven points to 249, a point ahead of the national average.

St Patrick's RC Primary School on Foxholes Road was Rochdale's top performer with 297 points, closely followed by Newhey Community Primary and Hopwood Community Primary on 295.

Belfield Community School's children performed best in comparison with how they were predicted to perform based on their ability when they first started school. The children actually performed 102 points better in their exams than they were expected to.

Councillor Irene Davidson, Cabinet Member for Children, Schools and Families said:

“This is really great news for pupils and a reflection of the hard work across the education spectrum. I thank all our schools and we will continue to support them in striving to raise achievement and attainment."

"Pupils have done particularly well in English and Maths at Level 4, helping the borough to equal the national average. I would like to offer my congratulations to all the pupils, parents or carers and of course the school staff whose hard work has been rewarded.”
