Vandals cause power cut
Date published: 02 April 2009
Hundreds of homes were left without power after vandals broke into a dangerous voltage unit in Newbold.
Fire crews attended an electrical sub station in Worsley Street at 4.10am yesterday (1 April) after panicked residents reported an explosion.
Remarkably, no casualties have been recorded.
It is thought the problem was caused when vandals broke in, possibly to steal metal.
Workers from United Utilities stayed on scene for the majority of the day, and had the power back on by early evening.
A spokesperson from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were called out to what we thought was a fire, but we discovered the voltage unit had exploded.
“United Utilities are leading on the incident, and there appears to be no-one injured”.
