Busman’s holiday for sporting Farah

Date published: 29 March 2009

Farah Rehman spends her working week with young volunteers encouraging them to get into sport.

Most people want a break from their work during their holidays – but not Farah. She is about to head off to Uganda for a month - teaching local workers and volunteers various sports and games so that they can teach local children how to play.

Link4Life employee Farah will be travelling to Uganda with the charity Agapao International at the beginning of April. Seven Hopwood Hall students and two lecturers are also on the trip and they will be staying in a local orphanage in a town called Jinja.

Link4Life has a long standing relationship with Agapao and has donated sports equipment to take out to the children. Farah, who is employed as Link4Life’s Youth Sports Volunteer co-ordinator, will help to organise fun days for hundreds of children while she is there. The group will also be going to a local school to spend time doing a ‘makeover’, cleaning, painting, buying books and school equipment.

Farah said: “I’m really looking forward to meeting the children and getting involved with them. Uganda was featured during Comic Relief this year and I hope to be able to pass on some simple skills to local volunteers that will help provide some ongoing benefit to the community.”

Head of Neighbourhood and Communities team, Peter Jackson, said: “Link4Life was delighted to be able to support Farah’s visit to Uganda. It’s an opportunity that I’m sure will benefit her and add even more to the skills and experience she can bring to her job when she returns.”
