Murder unsolved due to 'lack of evidence'

Date published: 27 March 2009

A murder remains unsolved as the only suspects have been released without charge.

Police launched an investigation after Paul Langan, from Middleton died from a blow to the stomach in December 2008.

Detectives arrested a 35-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man on suspicion of murder, but a “distinct lack of evidence” has lead to their release

It is claimed by Greater Manchester Police that the level of blow made to the stomach alone could not have caused his death.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: “the two suspects have been released without charge.

“There is not sufficient evidence to pursue a murder charge or a manslaughter charge. For such a case to go ahead there must be a realistic prospect of conviction.

“We carried out a thorough investigation and Mr Langan’s death is one that is inconclusive”

Mr Langan, who was 41, died after suffering severe stomach injuries during an incident at an address on Harley Road, off Wood Street, Middleton, on Sunday 7 December last year.

He was taken to North Manchester General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
