Family's knifepoint ordeal

Date published: 27 March 2009

A six-year-old girl was held at knifepoint with her parents as robbers demanded the family’s car.

Three men with knives stormed the Heywood house at 8.30pm on Tuesday (17 March), and demanded the keys to a Ford Mondeo which was sitting outside on Spinning Field Way.

Police say the man's wife offered the offenders the keys to their Ford S Max, but the men insisted that they wanted the keys to the Mondeo.

The father, a 36-year-old man, ran upstairs to get the keys and handed them over.

The offenders are described as being white men, dressed in black with their faces covered. The man in the doorway of the lounge is 6ft tall, whereas the other two are 5ft 10in tall.

The Mondeo was later found abandoned in Huddersfield.

Detective Constable Tim O'Callaghan said: "Though nobody was injured, this was a terrifying attack on this young family. They were totally defenceless in the face of three armed men in their own home.

"We are appealing to anyone who saw suspicious behaviour in the area, saw the car being driven off, or indeed dumped."

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 8632, or call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
