Wet weather can not prevent a Spectacular Summer

Date published: 17 July 2007

Although the rain drove the concert indoors, the awful weather could not but a dampener on the Summer Spectacular Night. Over the last few years Rochdale's annual 'night at the proms' has been held outdoors at the Honresfeld Leonard Cheshire Home in Littleborough but the appalling weather conditions meant the event was switched indoors to Wardle High School, where the packed house had a splendid evening.

Everyone pleasant had a fantastic time listening to the bands from Wardle High School and the young musicians from St. James' and Healey Primary School Bands. The bands from St. James and Healey were the first to strike up the music alongside the Wardle Training Band with numbers that ranged from 'Crimebusters' to 'Summer Romance'.

The intermediate band from Wardle High School were next on stage, wishing they had more money when they played 'If I were a rich man' before playing theme tunes from Toy Story and Brassed Off.

The Wardle Big Band had the crowd rockin' with their five number set, which included 'Born to be Wild'.

After an interval with refreshments the junior band were next to ply their trade and they played a range of Disney tunes including the 'Mickey Mouse March' and hits from Finding Nemo, Mary Poppins and they made sure they had covered all of the 'Bare Necessities' by playing the famous Jungle Book hit.

The main school band played some classical proms numbers, the senior and intermediate bands joined forces to play 'Ruby Tuesday' before everyone joined in for the finale of the 'Mickey Mouse March'.

Organiser of the concert Paul Lovatt-Cooper said: "My vision for this concert was to bring together and celebrate the remarkable acheivement made by the hundreds of Musicians here at Wardle High School.
