Hospital to investigate abortion advice
Date published: 24 March 2009
An investigation has been launched at Rochdale Infirmary following claims that a doctor advised a woman to have an abortion even though her baby was born healthy.
Pennine Acute Hospitals Trust, which runs the Infirmary, are to conduct a full investigation into the complaint.
Dawn Lewis, 26, from Greave, said that a doctor at the Infirmary advised her to have an abortion as there was a high chance that her son would be born with Edward's Syndrome, which causes severe heart and kidney problems.
She sought a second opinion and a scan at St Mary's Hospital in Manchester showed no sign of any problems.
The mother of two made an official complaint to officials at Rochdale Infirmary due to the stress caused by the poor advice.
