Anger as yobs smash bus stops
Date published: 24 March 2009
A councillor has called for an urgent clean up after yobs smashed up two bus stops and a phone box, leaving the street covered in glass.
Castleton councillor Ted Flynn was shocked to find commuters stood among shattered glass at the two stops on Manchester Road, with some spilling onto the road.
It is thought the first bus stop, near the Royal Toby Hotel, was shattered on Sunday night, and the second, near Abbott Street, was done at 2.30pm yesterday afternoon (Monday 23 March).
Greater Manchester Police are investigating the incident and could be looking to prosecute for criminal damage.
A police spokesman said: “We have been contacted about a smashed bus shelter and we can confirm that enquiries are ongoing”.
Councillor Flynn said: “This is a ridiculous outbreak of violence which we have been free from for so long.
“Castleton has been quiet and peaceful for a long time and it is sad that someone has to come along to disturb that.
“Still, it is a one off outbreak which I hope will not happen again”.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact police on 0161 856 8552.
(Rochdale Online has contacted Rochdale Borough Council for information on a clean up, and will report on any updates).
