Council re-ablement launch

Date published: 20 March 2009

Rochdale Council’s adult care service has officially launched its new re-ablement service this week after a successful pilot scheme.

The council's short-term assessment and re-ablement service (STARS) was set up last February to test out a new way of helping vulnerable adults across the borough to get more help to increase their independence, choice and dignity.

Since then, the pilot STARS project has helped more than 400 adults and older people from across the Rochdale borough to stay more independent in their own homes and it has now been officially launched.

Over six-weeks STARS' specialist care staff - like support workers and occupational therapists - provide intensive support for adults and older people in their own homes. By getting help to develop new skills, update existing skills and access assistive technology, people are able to live a more independent daily life.

Rochdale Council's cabinet member for health and social care, Dale Mulgrew said: "The official launch of STARS is a tremendous boost to the health and well-being of older people in the borough. They can now look to a new council care service that offers them a pathway to independent living and the return to normality that this brings, instead of struggling to continue living in their own homes or fearing they may not return home after a long hospital stay."
