MP backs local Scout groups in fighting unfair water charges
Date published: 19 March 2009
Heywood & Middleton MP Jim Dobbin has supported a campaign to ensure fair water charges for local Scout Groups and other voluntary organisations.
Water regulator Ofwat has issued guidance on payment for waste water runoff, leading to massive increases in bills for voluntary groups already struggling to make ends meet.
Jim Dobbin MP has signed a Commons Motion calling on Ofwat to reverse its decision, and introduce a ‘social tariff’ which would take into account the ability to pay of voluntary groups such as the Scouts.
Mr Dobbin said: “Scout Groups do an amazing job in Heywood and Middleton, helping young people engage with society and giving adults an opportunity to put something back.
“I have signed this motion to express my dismay to Ofwat that their actions are unfairly penalising Scout Groups and other voluntary organisations. I will be writing to Ofwat to demand they proactively prevent these changes adversely affected local Groups in my constituency.
“I have also written to the water company asking them to delay the implementation of these rule changes until a satisfactory solution for all sides can be worked out.”
Scout groups in Heywood and Middleton have faced increases in bills, meaning that many of the activities they put on for young people would be put in jeopardy.
